Finally, most players will be receptive to their coaches’ expertise and instruction, and to their caring, mentorship, and side-by-side involvement in pursuing high playing competence.

How Step 8 Advanced Our Discovery Process

We came into this Discovery Step determined to understand the assumptions that East Asian parents make about the raising of children. The most important facts that emerged were these:

An East Asian family is keenly aware, as a family unit or clan, of its reputation and standing—its virtue, honor, or “face”—among other clans and families with whom it has relationships.

Each child represents the family as much as any other member. So it’s vital that each child learns how to fit in, behave, study, and perform in ways that burnish her family’s standing. By being receptive to the guidance of older family members, each child learns how.

Each child is assumed to be a malleable being over whose final shape her parents should, and can, have great influence. So parents directly, even physically, guide, mold, and offer models for her performance. They don’t merely applaud her efforts; they actively participate with her.

Parents expect their child to do extremely well academically; it’s her responsibility to the family. If she does so by working long and hard, she doubly enhances the family’s standing.

To describe the role of Chinese parents, “child-training” is more accurate than “child-rearing.” The take-charge Chinese approach is captured by gŭan—purposefully managing or supervising the child’s development with deep dedication. In Japanese, shitsuke has a similar meaning.

In short, East Asian parents behave far more like coaches, far less like cheerleaders.
